"The Giant Step"

I enjoyed “The Giant Step” and how it showed a person taking what bad cards he was dealt in life and through his high spirits and patience he eventually was given what he longed for. Through the descriptions of how the boy lived, it seemed as though he had no other siblings and that it was only him and his mother in a small apartment, so he had a single mom. He never mentions a father and his mom is always home so my guess is that maybe his dad died in the service and his family receive compensation of some sort from the government. When he finally gets his surgery it seems as though he’s taken what the doctor said about being an “overachiever” and taken that negative comment and used it as fuel to drive him to achieve his goals. Knowing that he could afford such a surgery as this proposes that he might not have become a doctor, but he did get a job where he had the money to afford the surgery and also when he first stands up after his surgery he now has a wife who is the first to realize that both of her husbands feet are touching the ground. When he finally is able to buy those shoes that he always fantasies about in the windows of the shoe stores, I like that he thinks back on all the time he spent with those other shoes and shows a touch of respect for the tools that carried him to his happy ending. I think the story inspires people to never stop trying harder and no matter what curve balls life throws at you, you need to keep on swinging and hope for the best.
